Some people are for new gun control laws especially the ones for campus carry, but I am one of the many that are against them. Now, it is impossible to pick up a newspaper or watch the evening news without being bombarded with the details of another mass shooting, or another child that was killed while playing with a gun. As a college student, I stand firmly against this because I feel as if I should feel safe rather than be worrying if there is going to be a shooting if i attend my classes. There are many facts that support my position in which I will explain.
Since the 2007 mass shooting at Virginia Tech University, the widespread of amount of university shootings has risen. Since then, 33 states have passed laws in which students are allowed to carry a concealed weapon on campus. According to the 84th Texas Legislature that passed in 2015, students who obtain a permit to carry a weapon are now allowed to bring them on to college campuses. From previous tragic events, campuses all over the nation are now open to campus carry. I strongly believe since this has happened, it makes it okay for the mass shootings that had previously been occurring within our nation. Colleges and universities are so much more than a few buildings and structures, they are living situations for students, they are home for at least four years, they are learning environments where thousands upon thousands of students interact with one another, often under extremely stressful circumstances. .
Gun owners have appeared to be dangerous according to a Harvard University research, especially those in college have been proven to show how irresponsible they can be with a deadly weapon. A percentage students during their college years engage in binge-drinking, the use of drugs, vandalize, and get in trouble with law enforcement. For young people whom are just starting their lives, they do not understand how dangerous it could be to have a weapon on home if they were to get caught in any of those situations.
