WPA aimed at building public facilities and creating more jobs at the same time. The government spend more than $11 million for doing this program, for building schools, hospitals, bridges, also for workers' salaries which was $41.57 a month per person. ("WGBH American experience. Surviving the dust bowl.") Franklin D. Roosevelt also started other Alphabet Agency programs that tried to solve unemployment problems in the USA, such as TVA, PWA. Most of them ease the unemployment problems effectively, the number of the unemployed decreased from 15 million in 1933 to 9.2 million in 1939. (Truman, "Was the new deal a success.") .
Furthermore, overproduction was a factor of the Great Depression. Farmers and industries produced too much goods, so that consumers could not buy them all. Due to the mechanized agriculture, farmers kept producing food, for instance wheat. The wheat stocks in the USA kept growing from 115 million bushels in 1928 to 382 million bushels in 1933. This situation caused supply to exceed demand, which lead to deflation. Therefore, the price of wheat declined sharply, and many farmers lost their jobs. (Marchildon 6) Franklin D. Roosevelt realized the problem, and introduced the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) and tried to solve the economic problems. Franklin D. Roosevelt controlled the corn, wheat, cotton, rice, peanuts, tobacco and milk production and supply, which are the seven basic crops. Also, the USA government gave farmers money to produce less crops. It was an attempt to stabilize the price of crops. ("AAA, the agricultural adjustment act & administration.") Moreover, Franklin D. Roosevelt carried out the Monetary Policy, which means the USA government controlled and adjusted the market, thereby stabilizing the prices of crops and other consumer goods. (Course-Notes, "Roosevelt and the new deal.") The number of consumer goods bought increased by $20 between 1933 to 1939.
