Finding Empathy in All About Eve

Her 'paranoiac insecurities' concerning her age, her anxiety about being replaced in the world of theatre, and fearing that she will end up alone after her retirement without Bill's love, with only her press clippings to look back on These gave Eve a chance to exacerbate her insecurities and hurt her. When the audience finds out that Eve is an opportunistic and manipulative individual, their dislike of Eve and their sympathy for Margo intensifies. Margo reflects on her life deeply in the car, she admits her mistakes and realises that she must make crucial decisions, her poignant speech encourages the audience to sympathise with Margo despite all her flaws.
Our sympathy for Margo increases the more we see Eve's ruthless ambition and manipulation. This positions Margo to be seen as a victim, which encourages the audience to sympathise with her. Eve is willing to go to extreme lengths to ensure she reaches her goals. Eve attempts to take over Margo's life, she starts off acting like "another tongue-tied, gushing fan" of Margo and an innocent "stage struck kid", then slowly misuses the connection with Margo to further her own aspirations. She appears to have no loyalty to anyone and lacks a moral core. She attempts to seduce Bill, unfortunately Bill shuts her down as Bill is the kind of person who "goes after what he wants to go after." Eve even admits to Addison that she is using Lloyd and that her interest in him is purely strategies and will advance her career. She thinks she is going to "marry Lloyd", she comments "There's no telling how far we can go. He'll write great plays for me: I'll make them great." Eve is referred as a "killer" that has no concept of loyalty and gratitude whereas Margo is the "true star" and a real person with feelings. Hence, the audience empathise with Margo who has acted out of kindness in taking Eve in, and is now becoming a victim of Eve in order to advance her insatiable ambition.
