American Children, Fitness and Obesity


At the very least, students only have twelve to fifteen minutes of actual free play in the school yard. Even then, the teachers must be diligent to ensure that the pupils do not indulge in games on portable gaming devices while outside. Lack of physical activity plays a significant allotment of the cause of obesity in student's everyday lives. The State requirements mandate all students have scheduled active minutes per week for organized physical education. The space utilized for this activity is the school gymnasium. Even in high school, children around the country are expected to participate in this activity. Physical Education mandates for all grades 1-8. High school P.E classes are for the nonathletes. The coaches that are involved in extracurricular sporting activities usual keep up with the regular students. Most coaches are concerned with improving their particular sports teams, but must have so many regular classes under their supervision. For many educators, school work for the classes involves the students lounging around watching movies instead of utilizing the school's weight room, track, and bleachers for physical activity to decrease or prevent weight gain. There are no substantial heart healthy activities taking place. Schools offer pacer tests to determine how to fit the student body is but, this test is never accurate because many of the students do not put forth their full effort. Each student not enrolled in a physical sport should be required to take a PE class every semester for the duration of high school to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Athletes should be excluded from such classes because of their time invested in their physical sport. However, there are extenuating circumstances where some children are not physically able to participate in strenuous activities. They are excluded from the rigorous exercise. These exceptions from physical activity can be addressed through healthy dietary changes.
