The Flint, Michigan Water Crisis

The summer of 2015 brought organized demonstrations and complaints from residents and community leaders demanding answers about the poor water quality. In October of 2015 a local pediatrician reported high lead levels in children and expressed the long term damage of lead. " 'A child with lead poisoning presents with nothing. They are completely asymptomatic,' says Mona Hanna-Attisha, director of the pediatric residency program at Hurley Children's Hospital at Michigan State University and the doctor who released the blood-test results last week. 'But in five years there's an increased likelihood that the kid's going to need special-education services. In ten years, there's an increased likelihood that the kid's going to have ADHD, mental health issues, and behavior issues. And in twenty years, it's going to be a problem with the criminal justice system.'" (Johnson) I find it disgraceful that government took no action after several warnings and complaints of poor water quality. As a result, thousands of children were poisoned and will face life-long repercussions. Skin rashes and other ailments were also reported by residents throughout the city. Furthermore, there were 87 cases of Legionnaires Disease with 10 deaths during the water crisis, double the average cases. Local medical doctors, pediatricians and dermatologists are volunteering their time and expertise to combat the effects of poor water quality. It's reprehensible that thousands of people were affected before the government stepped in. .
The switch from the Detroit water system to the Flint River was approved by government at all levels. City Council unanimously approved the switch in hope of saving over $5 million, which was approved by the state treasurer. The state also had a hand in making the decision because the city was in receivership with an emergency manager appointed by the governor. Several issues have surfaced about the knowledge and information pertaining to the water contamination.
