Catherine, who is the niece of Eddie and Beatrice, is very loving. She is sometimes treated like a child but is actually old enough to make judgements for herself. However, whilst Eddie is paternal he can be just a little too over-protective of Catherine. Eddie has been a devoted uncle since Catherine's parents died, but now that Catherine has progressed in life Eddie feels a little intimidated. Eddie considers Catherine as his own. He does not want her to wear the clothes a typical teenager would wear, .
"Where are you goin" all dressed up?" .
Beatrice sometimes notices Eddie's over-protection and how Catherine dresses, looks and behaves. The audience might think that Eddie is not really being unreasonable because any parent or guardian would react in that manner towards their child. .
Before Beatrice's cousins arrive Eddie, Catherine and Beatrice have a family discussion over evening dinner about family values and loyalty. Beatrice and Eddie tell Catherine a story about a young boy named Vinny Bolzano who snitched to the immigration that a member of his family was an illegal immigrant. This shows how strongly Eddie feels about family values, trust and loyalty. Eddie says to Catherine.
"It never comes out of your mouth who they are or what they"re doing here." .
Eddie gives Beatrice and Catherine a lecture about Marco and Rodolfo. He tells them. .
"You don't see nothin" and you don't know nothin". .
This will show the audience that Eddie takes the values of his community seriously. .
When Marco and Rodolfo arrive Beatrice gives them a very warm welcome into their home. Eddie notices that Rodolfo is a young man and that things might develop between Catherine and him. Marco and Rodolfo are brothers and came to America by ship. Marco has a wife and two children back in Italy and Rodolfo is a young man who lives a very carefree life. .
Catherine is very thrilled to meet Marco and Rodolfo because she gets to experience meeting new people and she also gets a kiss on the hand by Rodolfo.
