The Color Purple and Indian Horse

Most times (she) pretends she (is not) there. (Albert) never asks (her) how (she) feels, (he) just does his business, get off and goes to sleep. (She feels like) he going to the toilet on (her). I don't like it at all He git up on you, heist your night gown round your waist, plunge in. Most times I pretend I ain't there. He never ast me how I feel, nothing. Just do his business, get off, go to sleep. 'You make it sound like he going to the toilet on you.' That what it feel like, I say." (Walker 79).
Albert and Celie's sex life is not like a regular happy couple's; she does not enjoy it or feels love from him. She treats it like something she needs to allow him to do and tries her best to endure it. This lowers her self-confidence. Celie understands that Albert is using her just like her father for his sexual desires and feels like an object. She has an unhealthy relationship with her husband which causes her emotional discomfort. Despite all the abuse Celie receives, she still decides to stay and abide by it due to the psychological effects the mistreatment brings her. When she is seen allowing Albert's children to abuse her, someone asks her why she does not fight back and protect herself , but "(She) don't fight, (she) stay where (she's) told. But (she's) alive" (Walker 29). Celie's mentality is to always do as she is told no matter what because she believes it assures that she will be alive. Therefore she resorts in submission and obedience in order to survive. Fear binds her to her constant abusive lifestyle. Therefore, Celie gains psychologically effects through her new abusive family. Celie's experiences of abuse may not be similar to Saul's, however they strongly relate in the affects the abuse causes them.
Similar to Celie, Saul suffers from abuse. His experiences also cause him physical, emotional and psychological effects. Although Saul does not experience pregnancy like Celie, he undergoes another type of physical effect as a result of the abuse he goes through.
