Aqueduct Zubaida

Arches were both a functional and symbolic structures that appeared at different locations for varying purposes. Monumental arches became established symbols of Roman rule and where built in Roman cities throughout the empire. There were no standard model for the building these monumental arches but most variations follow a common theme. Arches first appeared as wall openings but at later times, became detached and more freestanding. The first lengthy stretches of arches supporting an aqueduct channel were built in Ancient Rome in141 BC for the Aqua Marcia. .
Most ancient aqueducts ran underground but when it became necessary to cross a valley or river, the aqueduct was elevated on a bridge of stone arches. This enabled the water to flow at a constant rate. Depending on the landscape, an aqueduct may have had to be constructed with multiple tiers of arches. Aqueduct bridges are considered the modern works of the Roman world. .
             Structure:.
             - The Arch: .
The aqueduct is built of roughly cut stones made of locally found limestone. The stones are stacked on top of each other without any form of mortar. The arches relied almost entirely on the force of gravity between the stones. In order for the stones to remain stable within the arch, it was important that the vertical load between the stones be transferred from stone to stone until the foundation. No pulling or sliding forces could be generated between the stones or else the arch would fall apart. The Romans cleverly employed this concept in this aqueduct and cement has only recently been inserted in the empty spaces between the stones for additional support.
             - The Water Tunnel/Conduit:.
Water came into the aqueduct through an open channel down the right bank and flowed across the bridge of arches into a tunnel leading through the mountain on the left bank. The opening of the tunnel as well as the service tunnel and light shafts further up are visible in the cliff above the arches.
