Mistreatment of Migrant Farm Workers in America

The agricultural industry is regulated by the Department of Labor, but is often left to regulate itself when it comes to temporary or even long term immigrant workers. Many large-scale employers face no, or slap-on-the-wrist consequences for employing those technically defined by the law as illegal aliens. Essentially, what is taking place here in the homeland makes clear causal sense: harsh to almost deadly conditions in Mexico and other Latin countries, combined with an obvious need for cheap labor on America's farms, as well as employers that have grown accustomed to not being reprimanded for employing undocumented Hispanic workers has created the perfect storm to breed an enormous number of illegal immigrants working here in the states. These workers often work in horrible conditions and are treated inhumanely, yet do nothing about this discriminatory mistreatment, for fear of being sent back to Mexico or whatever country they have migrated from, jailed for illegally crossing the U.S. and Mexican border, or even blacklisted as a worker that other employers should not hire for work. .
With this system of migrant abuse, and a clear pattern of abusers facing little to no consequences, a total revamp of the current agricultural system is in order. America is a nation that prides itself on fair treatment and equal rights for all, yet turns a blind eye to the mistreatment of migrant farm workers in the United States, so passing the Agricultural Jobs, Opportunities, Benefits, and Security Act ( often referred to as the AgJOBS Bill), and refining the H2-A temporary visa system to better suit worker rights, should be a top priority for state legislatures in all fifty states, the U.S. Department of Labor, and eventually the members of the Supreme Court.
Since colonial times, Americans have searched for ways to maximize their profits, even if the means of attaining such profits were through the mistreatment of laborers.
