Film Summary - The Mission

Later on, Father Gabriel gave Rodrigo a stack of scripture books to read. There were a series of words that stuck in Rodrigo's mind as he was reading the books and they were "faith, hope, and love". The word that stuck out the most in Rodrigo's mind was "love". This persuaded Rodrigo to convert to a Jesuit priest. He was converted in the church that they had built under Father Gabriel with the help of Father Fielding. At the meeting that Father Gabriel, Mendoza, the Guarani, and His Eminence attended, Mendoza defended the Guarani after accusations were made about the tribe by Don Cabeza. Mendoza then accused Cabeza of lying when he said he was not a slave traitor when in actuality he was. Cabeza insisted that Mendoza apologize to him which he did. Through Mendoza's change in behaviour and attitude towards the Guarani, it shows that he truly did seek his own penance and with the forgiveness from both the Guarani and himself, he converted to a true missionary to preach the Catholicism.
             3. After viewing this historic film, two factions within the Catholic Church exists: the Jesuits vs. His Eminence. These two factions have very different attitudes toward the Guarani tribe. The Jesuits view the Guarani as human beings, not animals. The Jesuits saw the tribe as spiritual beings who were "possibilities". They were possibilities as they could be converted to Christianity; potential Catholicism. This belief was proven as the Guarani aided the Jesuits with building the Church, as well as singing, and not only making musical instruments, but possessing the ability to play them. To contradict this, His Eminence had a contrasting attitude towards the Guarani. His Eminence viewed the tribe as "hard to read", whereas the Jesuits could see the Guarani's potential as Catholic's right through them. His Eminence initially thought that it was "hard to know what they were thinking (the Guarani)".
