Literature on Accepting Death

For instance he says, "Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful" (Donne Lines 1-2). Here he explain that death isn't as powerful and dreadful as it seems, where he takes the power from death. It makes the death less powerful than what people think about it. Donne also argues that the death is calm and peaceful when he says, "From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be, much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow" (5-6). It appears that death is like a short sleep with pleasure. As the death cannot kill people since it does not have any power. Therefore, Donne argues that death can be causes by accidents, murder, suicide, poison, war, and sickness.
In "Do not go Gentle into That Good Night", Thomas' resistance towards death by showing the images of madness and fighting. He says, "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" (Thomas Line 3). Here Thomas showing his madness and frightening against death by saying "rage, rage against the dying." For instance he says, "Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, and learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, do not go gentle into that good night" (Thomas Lines 10-12). Here the image of the "sun in flight" represents the passing of life and the men, who were too late in catching the sun and grieved it on its way. It gives the clear image of darkness by saying the sun for that day is dying. Thomas says, "Old age should burn and rave at close of day" (2). Here Thomas brings into action images of "burn" and "rave at close of day" to show and emphasize the resistance towards death. By contrasting images of light and darkness in the poem makes the warmth of living and the coldness of death that encourages people to fight against death.
While Thomas' images can be applied generally to large groups of men, the images in "Death not be Proud", Donne continues to mock death's lack of power by saying that other have more strength in determining a person's death.
