In today's society, smoking has become a trend and is a widespread occurrence, even though everyone is aware of how harmful it is. There have been numerous campaigns against cigarette smoking communicating that tobacco causes death. Despite the knowledge about smoking damage, people still ignore the information and the number of people who smoke increases day by day. Unfortunately, the popularity of cigarettes and the dependence on smoking tobacco lead to detrimental effects such as the negative health impacts on all human beings, bad hygiene, and increased environmental problems.
There are many reasons behind the phenomenon of smoking. A primary cause is physical which concerns the human body's needs. In cigarettes, there is an addictive substance known as nicotine. It is the chemical of this substance that causes addiction. Nicotine reduces tension in the muscles that allow smokers to feel relaxed and relieves their stresses. Thus, it brings a feeling of tranquility and allows smokers to deal with stress and anxiety. As a result, many people smoke when they feel alone and depressed. The other side effect of smoking deals with the psychological aspect and that is how people perceive themselves in the image of others. Teenagers often start to smoke because they think it is cool and a way to fit in with the crowd. Some people are also influenced by family members who smoke. Nevertheless, the negative attributes of the habit take over the positive.
First and foremost, smoking can lead to a series of serious health complications including stomach cancer, lung cancer, and heart diseases due to a large number of carcinogens or cancer causing chemicals in the cigarette. According to the World Health Organization, there are about forty toxic chemicals in tobacco that can cause cancer such as nicotine, carbon monoxide, and benzene. These substances have a bad effect on the nervous system, respiratory system and blood vessels that trigger damaging changes in the body.
