Consequently, they are not someone they feel they can turn to for empathy and problem solving. Which can effect them when they get older because in stead of discussing their life problems with family and friends they keep it bottle up with in themselves that may lead to in some cases physical and mental break down. .
             Authoritarian parents often confuse discipline and punishment. Punishment is an external force for controlling parents without giving a explanation why they are being punished. External forces are effective to a point. Children will obey when the external force or threat is present but revolt against it when the force is removed. So, when a parent leaves a room or children are not under their control, they often do what they want because no internal sense of right and wrong is present in children.
             Authoritarian parents tend to use spanking as a method of external force. This has been proven to be ineffective for the same reasons, namely, children will do what they are told to avoid getting a spanking but they will do what they want when no one is around to spank them. In the long term when the child become a adult they think they can get away with unlawful acts because no one is watching. .
             The Authoritative parents uses high levels of control but also high levels of warmth. Children in these homes have clear standards of behavior but the main difference between this and the previous style is that in these households, the rules are explained to the children. As they get older they are often involved in discussions and negotiations about the rules that should apply in their house. Parents using this approach also tend to use praise and encouragement a lot.
             The outcomes for children from these households are the most positive of all parenting styles. They have been found to be happy, popular, confident children. They tend to be children who can adjust well to new situations and tend to be self-reliant.
