The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence states: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all are created equal, that they are endowed.with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Our modern laws do not support these rights that are deemed unalienable; therefore, there are still issues with equality, liberty, and pursuit of happiness amongst citizens. .
Our modern laws are supposed to support our rights to pursuit of happiness, yet the laws that are created have guidelines for people to be welcomed here. Restrictions are placed on people, so it makes it harder for them to purse happiness. According to US Citizenship while obtaining citizenship in America you have to: prepare for the N-400 application, take the exam, get interviewed, get a criminal background check done, and receive a decision. This puts a restraint on many people, and does not allow the pursuit individual happiness. Laws are put in place, but they only apply to certain circumstances. .
Secondly, our modern laws do not support our right to life because laws are created like: abortion, and the death penalty. The death penalty sometimes wrongly accuses people of crimes or even harshly punishes them due to factors like: ethnic background, and the court system. In Washington State jurors are three times more likely to recommend a death sentence for a black defendant than a white defendant, and in California people who killed whites are also three times more likely to be sentenced to death than those who killed blacks. Even these two studies bring up questions in liberty, and equality amongst citizens. .
Also, modern laws fail to support what the Declaration of Independence grants its citizens, which is the state of being free within a society from restrictions imposed by authority like the government. In the United States there are a lot of issues arising with liberty.
