He was engaged twice with the same woman named Felice Bauer. It never had a happy ending. He eventually met a woman named, Dora Dymant. A 25-year-old kindergarten teacher. The two quickly fell in love. They were instantly connected because they're both Jewish. And they both have a strong liking for socialism. For many years he suffered from tuberculosis, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. .
They returned back to Prague where he tired to overpower his tuberculosis. He was only 39 but the tuberculosis was invading his body. Kafka was losing weight, and had difficulty eating. Eventually it even spread to his esophagus and it caused him great pain to even swallow. He attempted many times to over come it. He eventually went to Vienna for treatment at a sanatorium. Eventually he was only able to communicate by written messages and he wanted his doctors to put him on morphine all the time. The pain in his throat was so intense that he eventually died of starvation. Kafka passed away in June 3, 1924 and was buried in the New Jewish Cemetery in Prague-Žižkov beside his parents. At the time of Kafka's death, his name and his work weren't well known. After his death was when everything changed. His friend Max Brod was the reason his work was recognized. And one of his best-known books was The Metamorphosis. .
