Science and the National Curriculum for England


Students can also begin to make sense of the world around them and the natural phenomena which often fills them with awe. The learners can find out new things and in an exciting and often enjoyable subject. .
             There are numerous skills which can be gained by studying science; understanding, application, manipulation and eagerness to learn being a handful from a list of many. The National Curriculum states that the teaching of science is involved in promoting pupils' 'spiritual, moral, social and cultural development', key skills and development of other areas of the curriculum (QCA, 2004). There is an increasing inclusion of maths in science which aids numeracy and an extensive use of key words and terminologies can promote literacy skills. There is also an important role of science in geography, history, ethics, business and many other topics and well as a general improvement in thinking skills. .
             Certain skills can be useful for general day to day life or can be applicable to other subjects. On the other hand, more specific scientific skills will be immensely valuable for those who go on to follow science or related careers. We need scientists in order to progress and develop; scientific ideas and discoveries help us understand and improve the world we live in – this is the utilitarian argument. The citizenship argument describes how scientific knowledge is needed in order to be informed about, and contribute to, the debates and decision-making surrounding scientific issues that effect society and the environment. A person cannot expect to have a valid opinion on an issue, such as GM crops, without at least a basic understanding of the science involved and its implications. Harlen (2010) suggests this is the "main purpose of science education". .
             Practical lessons in science can cement certain theories in the minds of students and, when done well, practical work can be hugely effective.
