The Expansion of the Executive Branch

It is the people that give the president the extra power that he needs to do certain things without having to go through Congress first. .
President Andrew Jackson is said to be the first president that expanded the powers of the executive branch. He was considered the people's president because he influenced the expansion of voting rights to the poorer white men. At this time, African Americans were still slaves and not considered citizens of the United States. His extension of the vote to a larger audience showed that the president had the power to influence Congress and their legislative decisions. From this point on, president can not only veto legislation but also push forward their own ideas with enough support from members of Congress. President Abraham Lincoln was also a prominent president that did many things. During his presidency he had to deal with a Civil War that could have never been foreseen by the Framers of the Constitution. He was the only president that had to deal with the separation of the United States during his administration. President Lincoln also signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which stated that all of the slaves of the Confederate States of America were now freed. The Thirteenth Amendment was added to the Constitution under the authority of Abraham Lincoln. This is another instance in which the president can influence the decisions that are made in the legislative branch. President Lincoln also used the powers given to him to enforce these laws until he was tragically assassinated.
There are theories that say the only reason that certain presidents bended the rules to expand power is because they were faced with situations our Founding Fathers had never heard of. President Kennedy had to deal with a hostage situation and Presidents Roosevelt and Wilson had to enter wars that included the whole world. New problems like these had to be handled with new solutions.
