Makeup and the Self-Esteem of Young Girls

It says, "Beauty is the opposite of perfection_ It's about confidence, charisma, and character" (unknown, 2016). There is an unrealistic standard of beauty that is starting to affect the self-image of young girls. Believing they must look a certain way in order to be considered beautiful. A lot of times this involves hair, clothing and make-up. With all the different images in the world today, of what is considered beautiful, young girls rarely see an authentic image of beauty. As the quote says, beauty is not perfection. For, it is our imperfections that make us unique and special. Others should not define your beauty. You should be confident in your beauty and know barefaced and all you are enough. But beauty goes far beyond your appearance, its rooted in your character and personality. You might say to yourself children are not thinking about stuff like this at their age, but let me tell you, you couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, twice as many girls are unhappy with their appearance as boys (Malnick, 2014). It is important that young girls know they do not need makeup in order to feel beautiful it is merely a cover-up of their true beauty. "Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it" (Confucius, 2016).
             Media Influences .
As a young girl strives for perfection it is not unusual for music and media to playing a key role in this, influencing them on how to dress, act, look. Young girls look up to the images they see in media, as the current standards of beauty. Everyday young girls are being programmed to view these images as beautiful, and the reason they feel the need to rely on makeup for their own beauty. The perfect look is not just affecting teens but little girls as young as four are starting to play and rely on makeup to feel beautiful. It is becoming more than kids just playing pretending. They want to look just like these images. Media has baffled the minds of our children to the point of believing media images always look picture perfect.
