Film Analysis - There Will Be Blood

As mentioned in question one, Daniels loneliness is evident in the opening sequence where he is shown alone in a remote area. This forces viewers to ask themselves why? As the film progresses this answer is never revealed but personally, once I had a feeling for whom Daniel was and interpreted his characteristics I felt that the question was answered. Daniels key goal throughout the film is success. What is important about that is that he does not strive to achieve what society deems successful, but rather his own idea of it. This was evident in the start of film where Daniel is shown prospecting ore deep in a mine. This depicts his dedication and level of intelligence by his ability to build structures and work alone. He shows us the lengths in which he is willing to go to succeed after being injured and having to survive and incredible journey through pain. This sequence earns him credibility and gives him the right to reach for more as the film progresses. In terms of genre, There Will Be Blood is categorized as a drama and reflects that in every sense of the word. The events that take place throughout the film evoked great emotion from me through the excellent acting and portrayal of themes such as love, hatred, jealousy, and religion. .
Daniel murders twice in the film, the interesting point is that both times he is caught and judged for it. First, he kills his apparent half-brother, Henry. He is later caught by Bandy and us baptised, washer for sins, and forgiven by a profit and fails at his attempt of redemption by bringing his son, HW, back. His second murder is Eli, caught by his housekeeper, this time with his God complex, which is his own perceived idea that he is a self-proclaimed god, he refuses to be judged by facing his back to the camera while sitting on the ground in a long shot. This sequence is the conclusion of the film and his final words were "I'm finished".
