             Discussion of Source Material.
The rates of incarceration have been in the increase in the U.S. with above thrice as much since the 1980s. The United States penitentiaries were below two million prisoners by the mid-1980s. Currently, the annual government disbursement on penitentiaries is projected to $50 billion per year. In the U.S., the rates of imprisonment are approximately 2 to 3 times as much as in Europe. Regardless of the fact that the country experiences a reduction of felonious cases per year, this does not appear to be replicated on the rates of incarceration. For instance, the Federal Bureau of Investigation indicates that there has been an increase in incarceration by almost four times. On the contrary, the rates of crimes on viciousness have doubled up. As such, the rate of escalation in incarceration rates does not mirror on the number of crimes re-counted. According to Levitt (1996) the degree of crimes did not decline histrionically due to large increase of incarceration together with an increase of prison confidence by pundits an unsuccessful policy.
