Children and Young Athletes

Children must take caution when exercising with diabetes when participating in any sport. The diabetic athletic must balance insulin by injection, food intake and exercise for their performance to be optimal. Sports Medicine suggests that their diet needs to be balanced with complex carbohydrates forming a significant portion. Exercise increases the utilization of sugar therefore diabetes require a pregame meal to raise blood sugar levels and hourly glucose supplementation e.g. Banana if exercise if prolonged. These intakes are essential for children with diabetes to perform at their peak in sport.
Epilepsy is a disruption to brain function causing a brief alternation to the level of consciousness and resulting in seizures or fits. About 1 in 200 children have epilepsy, and it can be dangerous when playing sport. Seizures can be controlled through medication however they occur on a weekly/daily basis so collision sports should be avoided. Parents or supervisors should be present and should know their management plan if a seizure occurs. Sports Medicine research advise that activities where seizures may go unnoticed, cause loss of control, or leading to serious death or injury need to be completely avoided, such as swimming alone, scuba diving and rock climbing. Thus with medication and management techniques most sport is accessible to children with epilepsy.
Overuse Injuries occur due repeated use of a body part causing tissue and significant discomfort. Children and young athletes are susceptible to overuse injury because of different growth rates in bone and soft tissue. It is also a risk to those young athletes that train frequently during the week or play sport on both days of the weekend. To avoid the risk of overuse injuries children should monitor should training intensity and volume of exercise as well as days of non-training. Sports Medicine shows that Children that have suffered from an overuse injury can recover by using a treatment plan in order to play sport again.
