He sees himself in it, and that reflects that the sinner is identified, the sun reflects off of it and makes him realize God knows his sin. Also, Soto emphasizes certain points, that at the time seemed true, although may really not be, "car honked driver knew," "Mrs. Hancock stood on her lawn she knew," and "My mom she knew." The continual usage of the word "knew" stressed the guilt that relentlessly plagued his mind. Soto suddenly feels everyone is against him, his guilt is clouding the way he sees things. Without the use of contrast and repetition, one fails to realize the effect of the sin on the young boy's guilt. .
             Soto allows for the reader to become acquainted with the mind of a young boy's by using special pacing and unique imagery. He cleverly creates a long run-on phrase while discussing the effects of the apple on Eve and when he mentally replays the image of the German Market in his head. Like the young child he is, the narrator rambles as though he is excited or scared. The young crook is quite young and innocent and his ways of thinking and interpreting situations is different than of an adult's. This sentence is organized in a sequential order that a young mind would think it, going from one idea to another quickly and with a short attention span. Imagery of the apple pie emphasizes how lustful sin can be. "The slop was sweet and gold-colored in the afternoon sun. I laid more pieces on my tongue, wet finger-dripping pieces." This detailed imagery appeals to our sight of the scrumptious pie and our taste buds are also ignited with words such as "sweet," "finger-dripping," creating instances in minds where one wishes to lick his fingers clean when done, just to savor the last morsels of the meal. Also, Soto's imagery stresses the awkwardness of the German Market, by stating "the warm air of the fan above the door and the car that honked- Young Soto was extremely scared of committing this crime; the stale air in the room stifled him and the car horn probably made him jump since his nerves were so edgy at the moment.
