On my last day in the ghetto, father pays a policeman to let me through the gates where I get on a train that will take me to babushkas in Zalesie. I am excited yet scared all at once.
Part 3- Babushka.
After a long train ride, I arrive in Zalesie where I see Babushka for the first time in many years. She hasn't changed at all. I also meet her husband Vlad, who babushka tells me, is catholic. For now I am at ease and comforted by babushkas warmth and love , however most nights my dreams are filled with fear for mother and father as we have not yet heard from them. Each day babushka and I tend to the chores and find ways to entertain ourselves. She teaches me Russian, poetry and folk songs which we both enjoy dancing to. One day when I return from playing babushka tells me that I must quickly hide as the men with the shiny boots are searching for others like me. For three days I stay in a hole in the yard where I pass the time by reading my books, hoping not to be discovered. Eventually the men give up their search and I am able to come out of hiding. It is now spring and each night the skies above Warsaw turn crimson red. Vlad tells me that the men in the shiny boots have begun to burn the ghettos, forcing everyone to flee. I am now more frightened than ever for my parents safety, I pray every night to god that they will come for me as promised.
Part 4 -Return of my Parents.
One autumn day I am overjoyed when I hear a knock on the door, it is my parents at last! However, when Babushka opens the door I can see by their sad faces that something is wrong. We sip tea while father tells us the horrible story of their escape and the fate of my younger sister Basia. He tells me that mother has found work as housemaid in Gloskow for a wealthy catholic family and that is where we stay. I say my good byes to Babushka and Vlad thanking them for looking after me and the next thing I know we have arrived at our new apartment and Gloskow.
