A Poetic Story of Ramón Sampedro

Many believe that it is an act of murder. Of those who believe this Ramón's brother is among them. He thinks that his brother should want to live and continue his life even in the state that he is in. His brother gave up a lot to take care of Ramón after the accident and express that if Ramón goes through with the suicide it will not be in his house and by anyone of his relatives. His brother is of the opinion that it is morally wrong to help him commit this act. Ramón's sister in law is from another viewpoint, she believes that if Ramón wants to die then that should be his decision and his alone. She respects her husband enough to not help Ramón herself. Her moral opinion is that Ramón should be able to make his own decision because he is sound of mind and has stayed strong in his will to commit himself to his death bed. Ramón's family had a difference of opinion and they treated Ramón with different attitudes based on what position they have on the moral issue, but at the end of the day, they let him leave and continue on the journey that he was pursuing. .
The second moral issue with this argument is Autonomy which has a definition that is given to us by the University of California, San Francisco. The definition that they give us is a "personal rule of the self that is free from both controlling interferences by others and from personal limitations that prevent meaningful choice. Autonomous individuals act intentionally, with understanding, and without controlling influences" (Pantilat, Steve). Ramón, in this case, was clamoring for the right to die with dignity which involved having enough drugs in his possession. Unfortunately, the courts that he applied to did not rule in his favor. This moral issue was treated with a lot of resistances, the courts did not rule in his favor more than once and he had to go to extreme measures to make sure that not one person who helped him take his life had too much involvement so they could not implement in his death.
