Prostitution in the United States

These are extreme physical risks to the prostitute, but also can be dangerous (such as in the case of sexually transmitted diseases) to the client involved. Sexually transmitted diseases include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. As compared to other two, syphilis was found to be more dangerous because it is caused by bacteria which can cause long term complications leading to death. So keeping these factors in mind, prostitution should not be legalized. The legalization of prostitution would include the legalization of brutality, especially to people in desperate social or economic situations. Lastly, in addition to physical traumas, there are several resulting emotional traumas which include "stress, depression, anxiety, self-medication through alcohol and drug abuse; and eating disorders." These symptoms are already prevalent in modern society as a result of unfitting role models in the media, and if society permitted prostitution, the psychological struggles would only increase. The symptoms are severe to the point that "women in prostitution are at special risk for self-mutilation, suicide and homicide." This study indicated that 46% of female prostitutes admitted to having attempted suicide at some point (Raymond). Clearly then, between low incomes, harsh working conditions, physical abuse, and emotional trauma, prostitutes are put at high risk and do not benefit from what some people consider a person's "right" to do what they want to do with their body. .
The legalization of prostitution would not help to stop other sex-related issues, such as trafficking and child prostitution. When people think about prostitution, they envision a male type figure pulling up to the curb where he meets a woman and makes the exchange between money and sex. This is only a slight glimpse at the exterior of prostitution, what underlies is much worse. Merriam-Webster defines human trafficking as "organized criminal activity in which human beings are treated as possessions to be controlled and exploited.
