The Pleasure and Pain of Addiction

Example: Cocaine, marijuana, heroin, meth, pain medication, etc. Therefore, all these types of addictive substances should be avoided as much as possible and if this type of addiction is detected, medical help should be sought.
Behavioral addictions give short-term rewards that induce persistent behavior despite the awareness of its adverse consequences, i.e. dwindling control over the behavior (Gleaves & David & Carter, 2008). The main cause of this addiction is the opportunity to receive an immediate reward from performing an action or engaging in an activity. It is also because the person tries to cover up the depressing feeling when the activity is not performed. The addicted person constantly needs to engage in a particular behavior and keeps on failing to control that behavior. And, after a while the intensity or frequency of the behavior increases. They may face 'blackouts' while performing that activity and will not remember performing those actions. Certain behaviors can alter a person's mood or emotional state by creating a euphoric feeling. This euphoria is a result of the adrenalin which is produced by the brain when that addictive behavior is engaged in (Grant & Jon. E & Potenza & Weinstein & Gorelick, 2015). Despite all the negative consequences the brain tries to recreate this high. But after the activity has been carried out, the person may feel remorse, regret or may even be overwhelmed by the consequences. Example: Shopping, overeating, internet/ video games addictions, working, sex cybersex addictions etc. Therefore, all these addictive behaviors should be kept under control and if a person is not able to do so, they should seek medical help.
Impulse Control Disorder (ICD) is a mental disorder which features a behavior that is acted out in an uncontrolled and impulsive manner that often has self-destructive consequences followed by the short-term gratification it provides (Strickland & Bonnie, 2001).
