During the war with Serbia, a lot of people were killed, and a lot of women were raped. They did the worst things that could exist to us. They burned our houses, and our lands. This negatively affected our economy because we had to build new home and new roads, because everything was destroyed. By the end of April 1999, over six hundred thousand people moved as result of the war to neighboring Albania, and Macedonia, while some others moved to Montenegro and Bosnia. As people left Kosovo, Serbs forced them to burn the passports and other documents. During this time ten thousand Kosovars migrated to Germany, they were treated there like asylum seekers. About three hundred thousand Kosovars live in Germany now. At that time, the US said that twenty thousand Kosovars could enter the US as refugees, and after one year they could become legal US immigrants.
Many stayed at home in Kosovo to fight Serbia. We didn't have Albanian schools. They did not allow us to study in Albanian, and we were forced to study in their schools. So this means that our people gave their best that could do just to see us in a better place.
