Reflection Paper - Applied Practice and Theory

During her one hour interactive discussion with our class, it was easy for me to see how she has developed many cooperative skill sets needed to be successful in working with people in conflict for so many years. When I took my style inventory, I noticed that I scored the highest in cooperation both times. Also in the past, I have been told that I have a very calm demeanor which has the ability to put others at ease when they begin sharing their innermost sensitive feelings about a conflict they are involved with. Other assessment tools that I have taken in the past also indicated that I scored very high in resolving disputes in a constructive manner when my "hot button" is pressed rather than in a destructive approach. During this class I hope to impart this particular skill as well as other beneficial skill sets that I believe will be beneficial for their personal "tool box" during and after this program. My hope is that mine and their growth as Conflict Resolution practitioners continues to develop and blossom while doing something so meaningful with the community in Woodville. .
During week three we had the pleasure of meeting Professor Roman. My first impression of him was extremely positive. Not only is he a wonderful professor, but he also spends time in Washington DC working with underprivileged African American communities. I found his discussion and hands-on learning style to be very insightful and intriguing as we discussed hopes and fears. I especially enjoyed his analytical approach to using the three chairs and interpreting behaviors based on our actions during the exercise. He managed to capture everyone's attention while still keeping everyone fully engaged in the learning process. Mr. Roman also reiterated the same theme as Ms. Miken which was to remain flexible, be humble and enjoy the experience of others allowing us to be a part of their community. His session with our class helped me to begin focusing on how our actions can be favorably or unfavorably impactful when we actually begin working with the community.
