Is it Acceptable to Smoke in Public Places?


Lastly smoking negatively impacts the environment and innocent bystanders. Recently this has become a topic of debate but it has come into the lights that smoke in the air can be just as harmful as the smoke a person inhales daily. .
             Smoking can be traced back to as early as 5000 BC, when people would cultivate tobacco and hallucinogenic drugs for their pleasure. It is only over the past half century that data has been seen and people have realized what a danger tobacco is to everyone. Cigarettes are made up of nicotine and about 4000 other chemicals that have not even been identified yet. Nicotine is the prevalent chemical in tobacco and it causes a powerful addiction which is why people become so reliant on it. It also contains ammonia, methane, and other poisons substances used in everyday life (Whelan 71). During the 1960's people first began to realize what a danger smoking was to their society. In 1964, the United States Surgeon General published the yearly report and smoking was a big chunk of the report. This report, consequently, caused people to be concerned for the first time about what was going into their bodies and how it was going to affect them. It published information about how lung cancer was caused by smoking in both and women. It also stated that during junior and senior years of high school is the most common time people start smoking. The following year, the first health warnings were put on cigarette boxes. Legally, they had to be against smoking and be big and bold on the package. Then in the U.S. Surgeon General's report in 1968, people read that the average person's life can be decreased 8 years with continuous smoking. (Bellenir 474-475). .
             In 1969, the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act banned cigarette advertising on the television and radio. Then in 1971, the first federal regulations were put into effects. Smoking in public places like airplanes, military establishments, and work places had been banned to a certain extent.
