It is finally the Christmas time, the holiday that you have been longed for! For this special time of the year, you are going to visit your best friend in USA. She knows you love soybean juice and fries more than anything else; therefore, she surprises you with a hash brown-and-soybean juice breakfast. Within an hour after your meal, you start to feel a shortness in breath and itchy. How could this be? You are sure that you are not allergic to potatoes and soybean; but have you ever thought about the edibles were mutated genetically with nuts and some insect repellent v/s food and chemical that you are allergic of? Genetically modified (GM) food should be banned in North America since it jeopardizes humans' health, its process upsets of the ecological balance, and its production violates the Mother Nature. .
Although hybridizing has been around for a period of time, there was no crossbreeding between different species until genetic engineering has come about. With genetic engineering, genes, the unit that determines a specific characteristic of a living thing, can be implant into another life form. To genetically transmute aliment, a gene from a foreign specie is inserted into the organism to obtain the desired property, or even to deactivate a gene. For instance, in order to minimize problems bring about by pests, some crops, like corns, were modified genetically to produce a chemical that is similar to the pesticide within the cells.
Genetically modified foods potentially threats mankind's health. In North America, most consumers are not aware of the fact that sixty percent of the groceries in the market genetically altered. With this lack of acquaintance, consumers have a potential to purchase edibles containing allergens and chemicals that they are susceptible to, and this can lead to fatalities. Furthermore, Greenpeace points out that there is a deficient in studies on the long-term effects of the genetically fixed foods on humans' health.
