Saboteur - Film Analysis

One, that he didn't burn down the airplane factory. Two, he is not a member of The Firm. He is proud of his country and this is a point touched upon greatly by the film. In an ironic twist, the only people who believe Kane are the untrustworthy. A group of circus members, a blind man, and a trucker are the only ones who believe in his innocence. It's ironic, considering that the seemingly trustworthy people, such as kind old Grandpa and a socialite are both Nazi agents.
This film touches upon national pride. However it does it in a way that leaves viewers in a state of confusion. "But their casual presentation of the FBI as a bunch of bungling dolts, their general disregard of authorized agents and their slur on the navy yard police somewhat vitiates the patriotic implications which they have tried to emphasize in the film. One gathers that the nation's safety depends entirely on civilian amateurs." (Crowther, 1942). While it is amusing to see the police have to rely on civilian help, it doesn't make the story or characters stronger. If anything, it makes them that much weaker. The FBI and Police are supposed to protect us, to solve crimes, and they need help from some random factory worker guy? Honestly it makes them look really weak.
The point that Hitchcock was trying to make with this film was obvious. He was trying to make commentary on things happening at the time. The pearl harbor bombing was very recent. This might be a source of inspiration for this movie's plot. There are some interesting parallels between the terrorists of the Firm and the Japanese bombers.
One such parallel is that they both weren't suspected to do what they did. They both had the element of surprise. The Americans didn't know what was going on in either situation. They hadn't suspected that the Japanese would bomb Hawaii. The factory owner didn't expect a factory worker to start a fire. They most certainly didn't expect to have one of the workers trying to put out the fire die.
