Strategies to Defeat Improvised Explosive Devices

.
In 2008 a summit was held in Arlington, VA to discuss strategies to defeat IED's and the organization holding the Summit was JIEDDO or Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization. JIEDDO was created for a single purpose and that was to lessen the effects of IED attacks and to eliminate IED's as a viable and effective weapon to use against US forces by designing technology and strategies to defeat IED's. JIEDDO came up with a three part strategy that is to Attack the Network, Defeat the Device and Train the Force. The first part of that strategy is to attack the network or in other words defeat the enemy before he has the opportunity to use IED's effectively. This part of the strategy has been incredibly successful in the last few years as expressed in this graph supplied by defense- update.com on page four of this report. This graph shows how the rate of IED's being cleared has increased exponentially since the JIEDDO has implemented their new strategy of attacking the network. The way JIEDDO attacks the network is by improving intelligence gathering on possible IED affiliates and placement as well as forensic and surveillance methods. One of the most effective methods that JIEDDO has used in surveillance is the use of drone's patrolling possible IED sites where they can establish if someone is preparing an IED and where it might be placed.
When JIEDDO or the joint improvised explosive device defeat organization was studying IED networks they realized many similarities to organized crime and began an organization called the LEP or law enforcement professional program, where they could utilize the skills and information of law enforcement to help find and defeat the IED network by specifically targeting not the people placing the IED's but those financing the IED's as well as those transporting and supplying the explosives and parts to create the IED.
