India, Marvel Comics and Manifest Destiny

To him, it does seem likely that Americans came up with superheroes based on their history. He theorizes, "It was no accident that the first super-powered alien landed on US soil." Americans gave themselves independence and power, and therefore feel a disproportionate sense of power and involvement with surrounding occurrences, according to Adesnik. Freeing themselves also lent added importance to helping out those in less fortunate positions, which explains why democratization is such a large part of America's foreign policy. Americans also idealize independent people who start from unfavorable positions and work hard to move their way up. In other words: the self-made man. .
These values are continually expressed through superhero personas and abilities. Although Adesnik proposes that superheroes are the manifestation of American omnipotence, every superhero is famous for his or her greatest weakness. Superman has his kryptonite, Batman relies on his gadgets, Hulk only gets his powers when he's angrythe list goes on. However, Adesnik is not entirely wrong. Social events and changes have often shown up in comics reflecting times of war, revolution, diversity and acceptance. Today's American society believes that the best way to do so is through modernity, ingenuity, and the field of science. That explains Spider-Man is so well-loved by the American people, even more than they do other superheroes. Adesnik agrees, which is why the character traits and background story associated with the original Spider-Man needed to be altered to fit Indian culture. The only thing he is missing is the fact that the rest of the world loves Spider-Man as well.
In the classic Spider-Man origin story, Peter Parker gains his motif of "with great power comes great responsibility" after he gains his powers. The motto develops on his quest for vengeance on the uncle whose death he could have prevented had he stopped the murderers when he had passed in midst of crime earlier.
