1984 - Symbolism, Imagery and Themes

Besides, the existence of his gaze is everywhere, which reminds people to be careful of what they are doing or going to do. He always watches every single action of each individual in Oceania. There is no way for people to escape from him. Big Brother's presence, though unseen by anyone, still considered to be the leader of the Party throughout their documents, newspapers and books. In fact, there is no actual information of when Big Brother appeared, but it is shown that Big Brother existed before 1930, when Winston has not been born yet. Thus, Big Brother is considered as a tool that the Party uses to control the supreme power and influence in Oceania. Because of lack of appearance, he remains to be a mystery. People might adore him, but in their heart, they might be afraid of him. Normally, people tend to take precautions of what they do not know or understand clearly. Yet, the actual control belongs to the Inner Party while Big Brother is just a symbol to demonstrate the Party's power. .
If Big Brother's existence is specific for the control of thoughts, Winston's symptom points out about not only his needs but also the Party's obsession which builds up the idea of sexual prohibition and thought controlling simultaneously. From the beginning of the novel, Winston showed the readers how the ulcer affects his daily life. "The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way." (Orwell 5) The very first disadvantage of it is to hinder him from moving up to his place. Besides, the symptom is reminding Winston as well as people in Oceania to maintain the right thoughts and proper behaviours. The Party bans its citizens from approaching knowledge like writing a diary. However, Winston owns a diary and starts writing in it. When Winston gets stuck in what to write in his diary, his ulcer recurs again.
