Both these systems could be installed to power and heat buildings or one's home. Solar energy systems are sustainable because they create no pollution and consume natural energy, unlike the fossil fuels used now to produce electricity and heat. These systems can last from decades and have virtually unlimited resources, whereas fossil fuel resources are limited and will eventually deplete. They produce a clean, reliable energy that will greatly contribute to the reduction of using fossil fuel.
According to Tom Henheffer," 'fracking' is the horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing of shale rock in which each operation needs 11 to 26 million liters of water, which is mixed with toxic chemicals." These common sources of energy are all highly dangerous and detrimental to the sustainability of our environment. Changes need to be made in mining procedures and energy sources. Moreover, cleaner energy sources need to be more progressively implemented to decrease our global and national rate of greenhouse gas production. The overall energy crisis includes the types of fossil fuels used, the methods of creating energy, disposing of post energy waste, and the magnitude of the national population which demands such vast quantities of energy.
As Joseph Shuster explains in his book, the world needs to stop burning fossil fuels. Shuster has over 50 years of chemical engineer experience and has founded and co-founded eight companies, many that address "diverse energy-related issues". Shuster includes the alarming statistical example that the "U.S. population reached 300 million in October of 2006" (97). Comparing the rate of population growth from previous years, he continues by claiming, "At the present growth rate, the U.S. population may reach approximately 390 million in 30 years." Shuster uses this information to support his argument that with a constantly increasing national population, energy demands and pollution associated with these demands will significantly increase if the current methods of energy extraction are not changed.
