Maintaining and Protecting Marine Life

Overfishing is something too that humans over look in the environment. Overfishing can be defined in a number of ways. However, everything comes down to one simple point: Catching to much fish leads to an overall degradation to the system. Overfishing is a non-sustainable use of the oceans. Worldwide, fishing fleets are two to three times as large as needed to take present day catches of fish and other marine species and as what our oceans can sustainably support. On a global scale we have enough fishing capacity to cover at least four Earth like planets.
On top of the overcapacity, many fishing methods are unsustainable in their own way. These methods have a large impact on the basic functioning of our marine ecosystems. These unselective fishing practices and gear cause tremendous destruction on non-target species. Bycatch, which is catching organisms that are not needed and either discards, or killing it in the end and bottom trawling destruction are two examples of this. The dolphin safe tuna is an example of the Bycatch problem. When fishermen would go out to fish, they would follow dolphins because they are the best trackers. Once they found a pod of dolphin they would follow until a school of Yellow Fin tuna was spotted. Next, the fishermen would drop the nets and start hauling in hundreds of pounds of this tuna, but also catch dolphins too. A lot of the fisheries got careless and either let the weight of the tuna suffocate the dolphin or they would cut it up and throw it in to the mix. Until organizations like NOAA stepped in and stopped this type of netting. So NOAA developed things like Purse Seine Net and TED's (turtle exclusion devise) to better protect animals in the way of commercial fishing. .
Bottom trawling is an industrial fishing method where a large net with heavy weights is dragged across the seafloor, scooping up everything in its path – from the targeted fish to the incidentally caught centuries-old corals.
