AIDS, HIV and Faith-Based Organizations

The situation particularly in Africa was quite piteous in the sense that there was so much stigma and discrimination on the people living with HIV. The sad part of it is that Christians who were supposed to lighten the burden of those suffering were the very people who inflicted pain and suffering through the sermons which they preached from their pulpits. They conveyed a message that labelled those living with HIV as a cursed people, sinful and rejected by God. Some members of particular Christian faith were forced to leave churches because they had conceived of a deadly virus as a result of their misconduct or they had been doomed and were eternally condemned therefore they were not supposed to stay together with the supposedly "clean and holy" people of God. "In Nairobi, a religious Sister who told her community that she was HIV positive was given her own cup, plates, glass and cutlery" (Nubuasah 36).
Purged from several misconceptions, the Christian community made a great stride towards the people in need of help. Numerous Christian social welfare groups have sprouted and came to the aid of the children who were orphaned due to the loss of parents to HIV and AIDS. These Christian social welfare groups sponsored and are still taking care of a huge number of children with food, clothing, shelter and education. There are so many children who were left to take care of themselves simply because their parents had succumbed to HIV and AIDS, thereby creating child-headed families. Christian groups like Young People We Care (I was personally a member) and Young Men's Christian Association were very helpful particularly in Zimbabwe, these groups not only assisted with education but also gave short courses on various projects such as poultry, piggery, gardening, needle work, carpentry, and building. These were meant to equip the children who are taking care of their siblings, with such dexterity, they could stand and fend for themselves.
