Ancestral Redemption in Literature

As per the Friar's wish, the families' hate is turned to love when Romeo and Juliet die at the end, bringing the families together. The Prince says, "Capulet, Montague, See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love"(V.3.291-293). The Prince confirms what the Chorus had said in the prologue, announcing to Capulet and Montague that their hate has absolved because heaven has "killed their children" with love. "For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo"(V.3.309-310).
In Emily Brontë's thrilling novel Wuthering Heights, Hareton Earnshaw strives to compensate for the mistakes of his ancestors. For years, there has been a line of abusive male figures at Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Heathcliff (he has only the one name), a gypsy boy with dark skin, is brought to live at Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw. Earnshaw's son, Hindley, does not accept Heathcliff and abuses him. Hindley treats Heathcliff like a servant, but luckily Mr. Earnshaw is around to protect Heathcliff. When Mr. Earnshaw dies, Hindley becomes the master of the house and actually has Heathcliff sleep outside and eat in the kitchen and mistreats him so much that Catherine Earnshaw (who loves Heathcliff) says, "If the wicked man had not brought Heathcliff so low, I shouldn't have thought of [marrying another man]. It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now; so he shall never know I love him"(803). Once Heathcliff grows older, and Hindley is out of the picture, Heathcliff "takes care" of his own son, Hareton Earnshaw. Heathcliff follows the traditional "like father like son" concept and completely abuses Hareton. Hareton is yelled at, neglected, and denied an education. Hareton grows up as an illiterate brute, and yet Hareton still manages to strike up a close relationship with Cathy Linton.
