Volunteers affect our lives in various ways everyday. Volunteers all across America make our world a better place everyday. From picking up trash in the ditches of our highways, to running programs for our youth, volunteers are all over. I have been a part of the Boy Scouts of America, since I was in fifth grade. I have seen how volunteers work at the troop level of boy scouts. Volunteers fill all the positions of the troop, such as the Scoutmaster, Quartermaster, Committee Chairperson, and the various positions on the committee. Most of these volunteers are parents of scouts in the troop. But how do volunteers affect the boy scouts above the troop level? .
There are several levels of scouting above the troop. Right above the troop level, is the district. There are approximately 10-15troops in each district. There is a district committee, and a district committee chairperson. The district plans activities that each troop may participate in. There are usually 7 people on the district committee. The volunteers in the district are usually adults who had been scoutmasters in troops at some point prior to volunteering in the district, according to Mark Bodensteiner, District chairperson for the Wauhawk District, which was the district I am a part of in Iowa. .
Above the district is the council. The council is made up of typically 4 districts. The council recruits volunteers to be on the council committee, to run the Boy Scout Shop, usually in the biggest city of the councils area, and also recruits volunteers to work at the boy scout Summer Camp. On the councils committee, there are the chairpersons of each of the districts, and also a 12 person board, including a council chairman, who oversees all functions in the council. In my council in Iowa, the Hawkeye Area Council, at this time there are 328 registered volunteers, who serve in all parts of the council, district, and troop. .
