Environmental Persuasive Essay

And in 2014 alone, worldwide we used a total of 6.6 billion tons of hard coal, and 1 billion tons of brown coal. At this alarming rate, we will have completely exhausted our coal reserves by the year 2088. Once we run out of these nonrenewable resources, where does that leave us? Where does that leave our children and grandchildren? Where does that leave the hundreds of thousands of generations to come, who will have to suffer because we didn't think of them? .
Many of the methods we use for obtaining nonrenewable resources, such as fracking and offshore drilling, are remarkably harmful to the Earth and many of the creatures that inhabit it, including us. Fracking is the process of drilling deep down inside of the earth, before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside. Water, sand, and chemicals are then injected into the rock at high pressures, which then allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well. This complex process has many environmental drawbacks. One being that it is possible for carcinogenic chemicals to escape from the fracking site, and contaminate the groundwater near and around the fracking site. This can be harmful to the animals that may drink this groundwater supply, and to us if these chemicals manage to infect the groundwater within a major aquifer. It is also believed that fracking may cause Earth tremors. Offshore drilling is a mechanical process in which a wellbore is drilled below the seabed. It is carried out in order to explore for, and extract petroleum supplies within rock formations beneath the seabed. This complicated process has much room for error, and oil mongols are pushing their limits by drilling deeper and deeper, despite the possible consequences. Oil spills are a possible devastating consequence of offshore drilling, one example of such instances was the catastrophic BP oil spill of 2010. This oil spill released 200 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, infecting the waters and poisoning the creatures that inhabit it.
