Should There Be Appointed Positions in the Canaian Goverment

            Since Canada has a democratic government, we should be able to choose who runs our country. Having a democratic government means that everyone has a say in what happens and they also get to elect who they want to represent them. Elected officials try to fulfill people's individual needs and wants. Since we do not have the opportunity to make many decisions for ourselves, we need to be able to elect officials to represent us in what we believe. The whole point of voting for government officials is so your opinion can count.
             The Governor General is appointed by the Queen, but in reality the Prime Minister recommends the Governor General and the Queen accepts the recommendation. The Governor General represents the Queen, promotes Canadian unity, signs important documents, and welcomes visiting Heads of States. (1) There are no applications for a Governor General, they have to be chosen by the Prime Minister and the Queen. In a way we do elect the Governor General because we elect the Prime Minister and trust and believe he or she will make good decisions. Since the Prime Minister picks the Governor General it is sort of like we elect the Governor General. .
             The Senate is appointed by the Governor General on the advice of the Prime Minister, who is elected by the people. The main role of the senators is to review decisions reached in the House of Commons to ensure that they are good decisions which will help the community and economy. (2) If the senators were elected, we could vote to voice our opinions. This would help the senators to understand what we think and what we want to happen. This would also make their jobs easier and would also enable the citizens to get what they want. It is significant that senators work closely with the Lower House or the Members of Parliament to try to fulfill everything we, as citizens, would like for our society.
             If we had all elected government officials, citizens could get more of what they want.
