Mass Media: Informal Control

I also present ways in which this medium directly influenced my life.
             Literature Review.
Research shows that social networking and social media such as Facebook and twitter not only influence social behavior but also have the capability to bring about social change. Grabowski (2009) found that the degree of activity of an individual on social media has a direct impact on formation of opinion. Grabowski found that the dominant opinion is formed by what he calls hubs and then this opinion is carried to less active members in the network creating a change in opinion of all. Gleason (2013) on the other hand found that members of the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) on twitter were able to construct knowledge from the opinions of other members of the group. Members synthesized the perspective of others to create an informed perspective. A study of a driving safety campaign on Facebook, called the Driving Safety Facebook Group (DSFG) revealed that members of the community reached out to other members and contributed freely to promoting safe driving. .
One fact that emerged from this study by Apatu (2011) was that a great number of members were above fifty years of age although the mean age was less than thirty. This suggests that older generations too used social media. Madden (2010) in Apatu (2011) found that use of social media by persons of above 50 years of age has increased by nearly 50%. Another empirical study shows that likes and followers of posts have a positive impact on the share value of business that use social media marketing. This impact is visible only after a post has a high following. The study by Paniagua (2014) shows that Twitter is a better medium for social media marketing as compared to Facebook. Srygley (1978) contends that there is a growing concern about the influence of mass media on the youth. With both parents working, the television or the internet is often used as a baby sitter.
