Prime Minister Lester Bowles Pearson


He was stationed in England, Egypt and Greece. Lester volunteered to work with the Royal Flying Corps, despite how dangerous this field is. While volunteering he adopted the nick name, "Mike," after a flying officer decided, "Lester," wasn't a tough enough name. Lester endured a short six weeks of pilot training. During his very first solo flight he crashed his plane and miraculously survived the serious crash. Once recovered from the plane crash Lester's luck still fell short when he was run over by a London bus during a city wide blackout. Lester was not physically damaged but he was emotionally. He experienced an emotional breakdown and was sent home because he was considered unfit for service due to having, "neurasthenia." Upon his return back home Lester went back to Victoria University, and graduated with a BA in 1919. He worked for a short time in Ontario and then in Illinois for a meat packaging company. After working Lester decided to pursue a love of his and went back to school at Oxford University to study history in 1920 on a scholarship. In University he continued to be a great student and also a great athlete. Lester was noted to be Oxford University's best hockey and lacrosse player. In 1922, he was chosen to be a member of the British Olympic Hockey Team. Lester spent two years at Oxford University receiving a BA in modern history. He then returned to Ontario and became a lecturer at the University of Toronto. While being back in Ontario Lester met Maryon Moody, who he then married in 1925. Lester and Maryon were blessed with two children, daughter Patricia, and son Geoffrey. .
             During the late 1920's Lester's career began, he worked with the Department of External Affairs. Later, in 1913 he served as a secretary to the Royal Commission to inquire into trading in grain futures and then in 1934, "price spreads." In 1943 he became the chair of the United Nations Interim Commission on Food and Agriculture.
