If we say that that person has no social life, it means that that person is boring, unfriendly and sometimes has bad personalities. According to Cambridge dictionary, social means, "related to meeting and spending time with other people for pleasure". Social networking is decreasing our social life or skills that can't be name as "social" networking. I want to redefine social networking as "Overused websites or applications by millions of people to interact with others that destroys of self-identity, socially disconnected and negligence in communication skills." This is because these issues affected too many people as even governments are participating in social networking negative aspects to solve this problem.
After we sign up for Social Networking Services, we upload photos of ourselves, post comments to others, share interest of your own and even show relationship status. However, just like what Mark Zuckerburg quoted on the first paragraph, are we really making our self-identity through social networking? It seems over the past years, we are poker facing ourselves through social networking, as we are free to do anything on these services. We are losing our self-identity through social networking. We post comments to others that is not true, we Photoshop ourselves to look better before uploading them and share something even do you don't like to contact with people you are interested in. According to an article in Huffingtonpost.com, Thomas White, a law student, this action is called "Social Media Mask." The social networking allows us to put on these masks and act as someone we're not. They want show how fabulously they live, how funny they are and how good they look. They mimic someone's fashion, blog design and update status to catch their friends' interest. Some people might say this kind of "Social Media Mask" can build self-identity in the web for those who can't express in real life.
