Biblical Characters in Lord of the Flies

Another way that Jack's character resembles the devil is seen in the way Jack enjoys destruction and murder. During one of the tribal dances Jack's hunters do, the text describes how Jack, "began to dance and his laughing became a bloodthirsty snarling." (64), showing that simply the idea of murdering another sow excites him, similar to the devil in the way that he mercilessly kills and enjoys ruin and damage in the world.
On the other side of the allegory is Simon. As mentioned before, Simon reflects characteristics of Jesus and is most often seen as the Christ figure of the novel. Once again in the beginning of the novel, is it easy to see Simon's parallelism to Jesus when, "amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for [the littluns] the fruit they could not reach, pulled off from the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands" (56). It is obvious in the imagery and the diction of the text that in the forest with Simon, it is peaceful and seemingly happy; making Simon's relation to Christ evident. This also mirrors the biblical story, Feeding the Multitude; in which is considered to be the first miracle by Christ. In the story, Jesus has compassion on the common-people and feeds thousands of people with only five loaves of bread and five fish, similar to Simon, who helps the littluns by giving them the fruit they needed from the high branches of the tree-all done without a word of complaint. Similarly, after Jack and the hunters displayed the head of the sow on a spear in the forest, Simon sees it and, " his gaze [is] held by the inescapable recognition", and the Lord of the Flies says, "Aren't you afraid of me? you know perfectly well you'll only meet me down there my poor, misguided child, do you think you know better than I do?" Simply the implication of the Lord of the Flies speaking to Simon as an evil figure clearly represents the biblical story of when Jesus meets the devil in the desert, and the devil tries to tempt Him.
