San Francisco's Restorative Justice System

The concept of restorative justice should not be a topic that is only taught in college, it is important that our children know the significance of this program and how it can certainly help develop better relationships with others. For example; a teacher in a classroom might employ an affective statement when a student has misbehaved, letting the student know how he or she has been affected by the student's behavior: "When you disrupt the class, I feel sad" or "disrespected" or "disappointed." Hearing this, the student learns how his or her behavior is affecting others. In other words, educating teachers on how to practice restorative justice in the classrooms could prevent future crimes and establish new values and beliefs in our children. Lets keep in mind that the point of restorative justice is to remind ourselves that we can forgive and move on, (Book) and it is crucial that our children learn these values at an early age so that way they won't be making the mistakes our past generations have done. Our children will not only be learning theories and definitions if restorative justice is enforced, they will also learn life values and practices that can improve our civil society in the future. .
Values and perception of life are also learned at home, and growing up one is able to see the different beliefs that our families carry overtime. Unfortunately, not a lot of families are practicing forgiveness and that's why they end up splitting up. The concept of restorative justice can potentially heal and protect all those families who have already experienced difficulties within their families and other families would prevent themselves from going through the struggle and suffering. In order to for our San Franciscan families to learn about restorative justice, we must create centers in which different mentors are available for families going through bad times or families that want to prevent unfortunate moments.
