Movie Summary - Witness

The coming together as one can be later seen in the end scene, where they all come together to scare off the corrupt police officers, so they do not harm John. John's lifestyle is vastly different to the Rachel's; in fact it's quite contradictory. His lifestyle is far more difficult as they always are trying to keep up-to-date with modern technology it is filled with violence and with morals that does not live up to the standards of the Amish as they have be socialized differently. He lives in a highly modernised society where technology which is the key aspect of their everyday living compared to the Amish who live a life without modern technology the mainstream society rely on it way too much.
The mainstream people are an individualist society, meaning they just work for themselves and that greed and selfishness will conquer over them when it comes to their wants. Also they think differently to the Amish as the Mainstream society feel that violence is acceptable where as the Amish shun those who even think about it, this becomes clear in the scene where a tourist smears ice-cream in Daniels face, as he remains resolutely passive, John Book than steps in and hits the tourist. Eli explains "Its not our way" John replies "but its my way". Throughout the whole film the relationship between Rachel Lapp and John Book is relatively awkward, as they do not understand each others way of life which makes then unable to communicate with each other, therefore leading to cultural clash. Yet this does not seem to affect their magnetic attraction. They seem to fight their differences just for the two of them to be together.
The dancing scene is where the first physical demonstration of their mutual attraction takes place; John spontaneously takes Rachel's hand and dances to the popular tune "Wonderful World" by Sam Cooke. The lyrics of the song state that he might not know much, such as where he is going and what he is going to, and that he is unsure about what his future holds, but one thing he knows for sure is his love for Rachel.
