Banksy and the Influence of Graffiti

Although, there is most definitely a distinction between some graffiti that is meant to be viewed, appreciated, and understood by all, and other graffiti that is not meant to be understood by people who aren't 'in the known', but to go as far as to label the graffiti culture and practice as being 'private' isn't necessarily valid considering the fact it is being done for the public to see. Later on in the article Cameron McAliffe's states.
"Graffiti writers and street artists negotiate their multiple subjectivities as legal and illegal, as 'artists' and 'vandals', as legitimate and illegitimate actors among their different social networks and audiences, in the ever-changing interplay of the politics of recognition occurring at the edges of inclusion, reflecting the complexity that figures graffiti as both art and crimeMany graffiti artists have devoted considerable time and effort to finding ways of selling their skills and products in ways that do not "sell out" their culture" (McAuliffe 137). .
Essentially I think the main difference between the street artists and graffiti writers is their pride in what they do differently. They use public space to do and say different things and each individual who comes across their work will interpret it differently, but ultimately both their loves for making something out of nothing and taking ownership of what they created is very prominent and similar. Graffiti is a form of artistic expression on the streets, so therefore graffiti is essentially 'street art'. Banksy for example prides himself off of his unique stencil styling of graffiti. His recognizable style and design of his work can be spotted from a mile away. In Michiko Kakutani's article in the New York Times named Stalking a Most Prolific Phantom, Kakutani states.
"Some are out-and-out sight gags - giant scissors with cut-here dotted lines stenciled on a wall.
