The Reformation and the Catholic Church


Luther was a German monk who was spiritually troubled about salvation. He was also a lecture in theology at Wittenberg University in German. He had three theological ideologies which are; justification by faith, primacy of scriptures and priesthood of all believers. He began to teach that salvation is a gift of the g ace of God which is only attained through faith in Jesus who in humility paid for sin. Along with the doctrine of justification of faith, the reformation promoted a higher view of the Bible as Martin Luther said, the true is God's word shall establish articles of faith and no one else, not even an angel can do so. Wriedt.M.2003.PP.88-94. In quoted sentence, Luther meant that, no one can offer salvation but only God who offers it through faith. The ideas in turn, promoted the concept of the priesthood of all believers. He further declared that there should be no pope, no monks, nuns and the priests should not be allowed to marry. In 1517, Luther came across John Tetzel who was selling Indulgences near his home. This made Luther to write the ninety five Theses denouncing the sale of these indulgences and within a short period of time his pamphlets were printed and spread across Europe. Luther's ideas become became very popular in German and most of the clergy accepted his criticism of the church abuse and was much supported by many people in so doing he had a fame. However, there were other reformers like Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin Martin Bucer who also facilitated the reformation to mention a few. .
             Thirdly, the essay has already agreed that reformation would have still taken place even without Luther because there were other reformers who also facilitated the reformation even after Luther like John Calvin. This person was a French Cleric and doctor of law. He belonged to the second generation of reformation; he published his theological tome and the institution of the Christian religion.
