Case Observation and Interview

Bill's environmental factors are that he is coming home everyday from school to a quiet home, a mom who is basically not there, he has no support, and is a young man really raising himself. Bill is not receiving any type of reward for good behavior and has been punished as a child and teen when expressing or sharing his feelings.
During the course of our conversations I discovered that his father was a drug addict and an overdosed caused his death. His mother blamed herself for not helping his dad get the help he needed to get off drugs. As discussed earlier, things were not talked about in hopes of the problem going away. Now his mother lives with guilt and unrealistic fantasies of his return. Bill tried to talk to her about his dad shortly after his death but his mom would yell at him and tell him, "Stop talking, he is coming back." Bill just shut down at that point. Bill has no motivation to do well in school, eat, or have good hygiene. He asks himself, "For what?" The psychoanalytic approach understands us from the point of view of our unconscious and early childhood experiences. This has greatly impacted the young adult that he has become. .
I am trying to focus on the Humanistic Approach with Bill. I am telling him to look at his future not his past. I have told him that he has had unforeseen circumstances that have happened in his life but only he can change his future. I have talked to him about his intrinsic worth and vast potential of his future. We are working on setting goals and values for his life. We have talked about Free Will and what his expectations for himself are. It is hard for him right now to see a silver lining but with my continuous support I have high hopes that we will get there. .
Bill admits that he is stressed due to having to take care of is mom and he is also grieving because of the loss of his father. He has had to take care of himself at an early age.
